- Description
- In Australia, community or primary care, and public health, are terms that are used to refer to organisations which provide health-related services in the community. These organisations share the aim of supporting and improving the health of communities by providing a universal point of access to the health system, promoting health and preventing illness, providing high-quality health care across the lifespan and ensuring continuity of care (Australian Productivity Commission, 2011). The roles nurses play in these organisations are complex and diverse, ranging from early childhood clinics, occupational health services, chronic disease management and palliative care, to providing education on healthy lifestyle and prevention of disease or injury. Also important is the role of nurses in identifying and addressing social, environmental and political factors that impact o the health of individuals and communities as a whole (Scholfield et al., 2001). The integral role of nurses in achieving the aim of community care is well acknowledged, as is the importance of nursing's future role (Adrian, 2009; Department of Health and Ageing, 2009s; 2010).
